From a friend in email today: "thank you for being such a good friend. You've been a real blessing in my life, a gift from god if you ask me." And this is the guy who teases me about my kinky inclinations and thinks I'm a bit of a freak.

Another friends called tonight and thanked me for a conversation we had last weekend that really helped him with a breakup he's been trying to make peace with. He and I have been having these talks on and off since 1995.

An ex-boss called this week and to talk to me about a potential job offer. I'm very loyal to my current company so I told him "not at this time". But I was flattered by the offer.

I've been feeling very withdrawn and really questioning "what's the point of life?" lately.

Guess the universe is sending me some answers. Go figure.

I couldn't agree more with these people. You are a wonderful friend. And you certainly helped me get through a very dark time. Thanks again for everything. Hugs

Thanks Colin. It's important to me get this feedback at this stage in my life. I'm used to giving to a community and seeing the results of that work. Since I've backed away from the community I knew best I've been feeling a bit adrift. I guess I've been doing my "giving" on a 1-to-1 basis. Until I got this feedback I didn't realize how much that mattered.

Thank you. This is helping me get through a "dark time".

Thank you. Nothing specific to talk about other than just being unsure of what direction I want to take in the future... but it's nice to know you are there.

Bailey,

It is unfortunate that we live in a world today that has so many ways for people to connect in a detached manner that most people never "really" connect with one another. I can say, speaking from my own experience, that you contribute to the lives of people around you in ways you can't even begin to imagine. One of the reasons that I have sought you out to stay connnected with is because every one of my face-to-face experiences of you, no matter how brief, you were present with the moment. You look at people when speaking to them, you hear what they are saying, and you never make light of what is going on for them no matter how trivial it may actually be. Genuine people are a very rare commodity in modern America. Don't sell yourself short. The two finest qualities a person can have are very present in you - compassion and empathy. These two qualities are the well-spring of life from which flow love, joy, peace, hospitality, and a myriad of other soothing balms that make being alive bearable.

You are much loved by many.

Blake

Wow. Thank you.

This comment really gives me something to think about. Maybe that's why I've stepped back from social interaction. I do these things but I don't often get them in return. And maybe that's why I was feeling drained, empty, and disappointed at many of the events I attended.

And it explains why I've become such good friends with a man that I have so little in common with (as far as our backgrounds and future plans): my tango teacher. He is also someone who has compassion and empathy. It's been a puzzle to me how we've become so close but this makes it clear.

The few people I've kept close over the years also have these traits. But it was nothing I could put into words.

I'm glad you are back on LJ and I thank you for taking the time to write this. As you said, our interactions have been limited, but I value them. Especially today.
